Hindustani Classical Music: Thaat system

by Nilotpal Sanyal (https://nilotpalsanyal.github.io)
The structure of thaats was introduced by Pt. Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande (1860-1936) to roughtly classify the various Ragas of the Hindustani (North Indian) Classical music. A thaat is a heptatonic parent scale consisting of one chosen form/flavor of each of the main 7 notes of the 7-note octave, where the flavors are chosen from the 12-note octave. As there are two flavors for each of R, G, M, D and N, and one flavor for each of S and P, the possible number of thaats is 2*2*2*2*2 = 32. However, only 10 of these are used for classification. The following table shows the names and constituent notes of the 10 thaats, marking the flavors of R, G, M, D and N specific to each of them, shows the corresponding scales (mela) in the Carnataki (South Indian) Classical music and Western Classical music, and lists some well-known ragas classified under each thaat. For a comprehensive list of ragas of the Hindustani Classical music, see here. Note that, the thaat system is not very efficient as many ragas can be justifiably classified under two different thaats and there is no consensus among musicians as to which one is to chosen. The main purpose of the thaat system is to offer a rough classification of the ragas.
