Ponderable quotes from great scientists

...rational is not always the spirit in science..
"A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it ... An important scientific innovation rarely makes its way by gradually winning over and converting its opponents: it rarely happens that Saul becomes Paul. What does happen is that its opponents gradually die out, and that the growing generation is familiarized with the ideas from the beginning: another instance of the fact that the future lies with the youth."
- Max Planck, physict (1858-1947), in Scientific autobiography, 1950, p. 33, 97
...mystery lies not only at the endpoints..
"We used to think that if we knew one, we knew two, because one and one are two. We are finding that we must learn a great deal more about 'and'."
- Arthur Eddington, astronomer, physicist, mathematician (1882-1944)
...do you really 'see' it?
"A mathematical theory is not to be considered complete until you have made it so clear that you can explain it to the first man whom you meet on the street."
- cherishingly quoted by David Hilbert, mathematician (1862-1943) from Joseph-Diez Gergonne (1771-1859).
See this article
...didn't you get this hunch?
"The supreme function of reason is to show man that some things are beyond reason."
- Blaise Pascal, mathematician, physicist, inventor, philosopher, writer, and Catholic theologian (1623-1662)
...doesn't this ring a deep-sounding bell?
"No, no, you are not thinking, you are just being logical."
- Niels Bohr, physicist (1885-1962), [in response to those who made purely formal or mathematical arguments, as quoted in What Little I Remember (1979) by Otto Robert Frisch, p. 95)
...the sign of sincerity, the sound of honesty
"I speak from my present level of ignorance. The more you know, the more ignorant you become, because ignorance grows exponentially - the more answers you get, the more new questions arise."
- Itzhak Bentov, scientist, inventor, mystic and author (1923-1979)
...there is only continuum of knowledge, subjects are man-made for convenience...never to forget
"It seems plain and self-evident, yet it needs to be said: the isolated knowledge obtained by a group of specialists in a narrow field has in itself no value whatsoever, but only in its synthesis with all the rest of knowledge and only inasmuch as it really contributes in this synthesis toward answering the demand, "Who are we?""
- Erwin Schrodinger, physicist (1887-1961), in "Science and Humanism" (1951)
"If our small minds, for some convenience, divide this glass of wine, this universe, into parts — physics, biology, geology, astronomy, psychology, and so on — remember that nature does not know it!"
- Richard Feynman, physicist (1918-1988). From The Feynman Lectures on Physics (1964), Vol 1, Ch 3 ("The Relation of Physics to Other Sciences"), Sec 3-7 ("How did it get that way?")
...founding contributions of India
"It is India that gave us the ingenious method of expressing all numbers by means of ten symbols, each symbol receiving a value of position as well as an absolute value; a profound and important idea which appears so simple to us now that we ignore its true merit. But its very simplicity and the great ease which it has lent to computations put our arithmetic in the first rank of useful inventions; and we shall appreciate the grandeur of the achievement the more when we remember that it escaped the genius of Archimedes and Apollonius, two of the greatest men produced by antiquity."
- Pierre-Simon Laplace, French scholar and polymath (1749-1827). Quoted in H Eves Return to Mathematical Circles (Boston 1988)
...there is only one sense, the common sense
"All of science is nothing more than the refinement of everyday thinking."
- "Physics and Reality" in the Journal of the Franklin Institute Vol. 221, Issue 3 (March 1936)

"If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music."
- Albert Einstein

Musings

This page contains various fruits from reflections that you are free to find interesting, revealing, or boring. Most of these are pitched at very general philosophical level of things.

One must overcome the suffering from badness by being good. And the suffering from goodness by being unattached.

Wisdom lurks not in answers, neither in questions, but in seeing the utter inability to form a proper question.
April 4, 2019

A prerequisite of deeper knowledge is a lesson in unlearning. One hasn't really learnt much unless one has realized the value of unlearning.
April 8, 2019

We cannot practice Truth as such. Because we cannot not practice Truth. It is not a choice. If it is Truth, there is no other option. So, in order to find Truth we have to look deeply to inquire and see what is always being practiced, no matter what. What is meant by 'practice of Truth' is the lifestyle that commonly helps in this enquiry. But one may choose not to follow this lifestyle, so this lifestyle itself is not Truth. Truth cannot be not followed. Every entity is following the Truth under all conditions.

Intuition is tuition from inside.
April 19, 2019

You approach the deepest part of any question about anything when you approach the questioner.

Perhaps the highest class of art is what can express the known and the unknown equally and inseparably in every movement, thereby invoking a sense of transcendence of both.
September 28, 2019

Whatever is made of parts is empty in itself.
October 7, 2019

In the long run, an intellect that is able to find very deep solutions not apparent to others is also able to find very deep problems not apparent to others. Intellect is to be used to see things as clearly as possible through it, but no more. In the end, true fulfillment is to be attained by going beyond intellect.

The basic limitation of a tree is in the same seed that gives rise to the tree; one need not look outside. As such, the basic limitation of a method or an innovation lies at its very definition or formulation. All sorts of rigorous experiments to explore its limitation finally will only lead us to re-examine its root and thereby notice what we simply have missed or avoided to heed previously.

On journey into yourself: The most mysterious peak, the most charming waterfall, the most glorious valley and the most arcane forest are nothing special compared to the wondrous adventure and the wordless marvel that lie in the way of the journey into oneself.
December 4, 2019

On the higher idea of victory: You win not because you can kill others; that is a lower idea of victory. The higher idea of victory is that you win because nothing can kill you.
December 9, 2019

The less you control your mind, the more others will do, even without intention. The more you control your mind, the less others will do.
February 13, 2020

You can look at life face-to-face only from the point of view of death. All other views are at most side-views.
March 18, 2020

If a bird is trained to say 45 plus 55 equals 100, this does not mean the bird understands it, but neither does it mean that the statement is wrong. One should consciously avoid both of these shortsightednesses to reach the truth.

A good teacher tries to teach you from your inside. And, thus, borrowing the expression of Bruce Lee, 'A good teacher protects his pupils from his own influence.'
September 5, 2020

Generally, a superstition has a truth behind it. Ordinary critics are satisfied only to criticize the superstition; they focus on criticism, pride in negating and there they finish. Seekers of truth, on the other hand, see past the superstition and discover the truth behind; they focus on the truth and try to express the truth properly.

February 21, 2021

If you have understood something as truth but do not feel like practicing it, you have not yet understood it or misunderstood it.
July 3, 2021

March 2, 2022

Happiness is not based on pleasure, charm, ambition, adventure, or skills. Happiness is based on peace. If you do not have peace in life, all those will eventually prove meaningless and will leave you unhappy. But if you have peace in life, all those will be meaningful and will truly add to your happiness.

For a sincere follower of a higher ideal, every moment is a test, every moment is a choice and thus every moment is a chance to assert the freedom that is expressed in the ideal.
April 22, 2011

The world is not so illogical as to give the impression that it is completely false and it is not so logical as to give the impression that it is completely true.
February 29, 2012

Greatness of character cannot be faked. If you try too hard, you will end up being great.
April 25, 2013

True humility is humility in thoughts. No one is seeing your thoughts; you can easily think whatever you want and yet humility there is thus truly pure humility. Humility in action, not backed by humility in thought, can be weakening or misleading. It is better to be more concerned about humility in thought than in appearance. In the long run, this is more powerful.

June 8, 2014

Experience is truly transcended by experience alone.
August 21, 2014

You are not free not because the world depends on you, but because you depend on the world. So, for yourself, always think in terms of what you can do to overcome a situation rather than what others can do or could have done to make things easier for you.

After looking long time at a mountain, you may realize it is yourself whom you are looking at. You have been looking only at yourself in your whole life through millions of things.
November 20, 2016

Unconditional end can not, as such 'come' from conditional means. The intuition is that so long as one appreciates the idea of means, one has to avail them without condition. But when the end is reached, the idea of end and means both appear unreal. Even the idea of a hindsight appear unreal.

More subtle and spontaneous than doing is thinking. More subtle and spontaneous than thinking is feeling. More subtle and spontaneous than feeling is being. It is great (and hard) to elevate thinking, greater (and harder) to elevate feeling and greatest (and hardest) to elevate being.

Sign up for a course with yourself: Whatever courses you may take, do not ever forget to sign up for a course with yourself. Attend your class everyday. Hear yourself speaking attentively. Try to understand yourself, take notes by all means, ask questions to yourself, follow your answers carefully, get things clarified by further discussions with yourself. Do daily homeworks assigned by yourself. Get them checked by yourself. Sometimes make jokes with yourself, humor yourself, but anyways respect yourself. Once in a while, sit for test set by yourself. Ask yourself for test suggestions for good preparation beforehand. If you don't do good in the test, do not simply blame yourself, but do consult with yourself regarding what the problem was. If necessary, get extra hours with yourself so that next time you may do good. The benefit of this course is that you get to become more close to yourself. If things turn well, eventually you become a true friend of yourself, and then you may have access to the secrets of yourself, that only yourself knows!
